Great-crested Grebe. Max count five on the 23rd.-MAB ISw
Cormorant. Recorded on 17 dates with a peak count of three on 8th and 10th.-ISw.
Heron. Maximum count three on the 11th.-ISw.
Mute Swan. Maximum count four on 18th and 19th.-ISw.
Pink-footed Goose. One present daily until 30th.-ISw MAB
Grey Lag Goose. Max seven on 26th.-MAB ISw.
Canada Goose. Max count 63 on the 4th.-ISw
Shelduck. Pair on 11 dates until the 26th.-MAB PSn ISw et al.
Wigeon. Max count 21 on the 4th.-ISw with the last of the winter a pair on the 16th.-ISw.
Gadwall. Numbers peaked at 41 on the 22nd.-MAB
Teal. Maximum count 20 on the 14th.-ISw.
Shoveler. Two on 3rd, 13th and 28th and 30th with one on 10th.-ISw MAB MKN BM GHA. Max though was three (2males) on 29th.-MAB ISw.
Pochard. Max count seven on 1st and 2nd.-ISw, pair still present on 30th.-MAB ISw.
Tufted Duck. Max count 23 on the 2nd.-ISw.
Marsh Harrier. A female flew north on the 23rd.-MAB ISw.
Sparrowhawk. Recorded on 11 bird / days.-MAB ISw et al.
Common Buzzard. Birds were logged on 22 dates (64 bird / days).-MAB ISw et al with a peak count of 13 on the 28th.-MAB and ten on the 30th.-MAB.
Kestel. Recorded on 24 dates (41 bird /days) with a peak count of five on the 23rd.-MAB et al.
Hobby. The first of the year was seen on the 23rd.-MAB AI ISw.
Peregrine. One was seen on 18th.-MKN.
Red-legged Partridge. Two on the 24th.-PSn MAB.
Grey Partridge. A pair was seen on the 10th.-ISw
Water Rail. Single bird on the 10th.-MKN.
COMMON CRANE. The highlight of the year so far and missed by all Carr Vale main players. Two circled the flashes a couple of times then flew off north-west at 0730 on the 9th.-A Kydd (+ wife) and B Ward. A fantastic addition to the sites list even if I did miss them, not that I’m gutted or anything!!!
Oystercatcher. The resident pair was present daily with three on four dates and four present on the 2nd.-ISw MAB et al.
Avocet. A pair arrived at about 0815 on the 25th but flew straight through south-east. They were at Pleasley Pit briefly from about 0830 but by 0900 were back at CV where they remained until 1100. They then flew to Sutton Scarsdale Flash where they remained for the rest of the day. The following day they were at Sutton Scarsdale flash at 0815 but by 0845 they were back at CV where they stayed all day, that was until I finished work at 1700 and by 1730 they were back at Sutton Scarsdale Flash where they remained until dark. Despite seeing them three times I never saw them at CV. They were seen displaying, mating and nest scraping so were kept quiet on the 2nd day.-ISw MAB et al.
Little Ringed Plover. Maximum count was nine on the 1st.-MKN.
Golden Plover. 30 on 10th.-ISw and 21 northern birds on the 24th.-MAB et al.
Dunlin. One on the 1st and five on the 19th.-ISw, a very poor month for this species.
Snipe. One or two on seven dates between the 11th and 21st.-ISw.
Whimbrel. Single birds on the 16th.-ISw and 22nd.-ISw.
Curlew. Singles on 17th.-ISw and 23rd.-MKN.
Redshank. Max count three on the 8th and 9th.-ISw
Common Sandpiper. First was one on the 17th.-ISw, maximum count was four on the 21st.-ISw.
Common Gull. One on the 19th was the only record.-ISw.
Common Tern. The first was seen on the 22nd.-ISw with daily records from the 24th with a peak of three on the 25th.-AI.
Cuckoo. One was heard on the 12th, a very early date.-per MAB and one was heard again the following day.-MKN with another on the 24th.-MKN.
Little Owl. Single birds were recorded from three sites from the mound during the month.-ISw PSn MAB et al.
Tawny Owl. One reported on several dates during the month.-AA.
Swift. One was seen on the 20th, our earliest ever arrival date.-RMB. 20 in by the 30th.-MAB.
Kingfisher. One on 10th.-MKN and another was seen on the 19th.-AG.
Green Woodpecker. Singles on the 11th and 19th.-ISw.
Sand Martin. Max count 30 on the 30th.-MAB.
Swallow. Max count was 60 on the 19th.-MAB.
House Martin. First of the year was two on the 6th.-AFell but very few during the month.-ISw.
Meadow Pipit. Only count was 15 on the 3rd.-ISw.
Yellow Wagtail. First of the year was seen on the 11th.-ISw, daily between 17th and 24th with max of five on 24th.-MAB. One or two later in the month.
White Wagtail. One on 11 dates during the month.-ISw MAB.
Wheater. Singles on 3rd.-ISw, 24th and 26th.-MAB.
Song Thrush. Five singing on the 10th.-ISw.
Grasshopper Warbler. First of the year was seen on 13th.-ISw, regular during the latter half of the month with a peak of seven reeling on 24th.-MAB ISw and AF (joint effort).
Sedge Warbler. First of the year were two on the 22nd.-ISw MAB, peak count was eight singing on the 27th.-MAB.
Reed Warbler. First for the year was singing on the 24th.-MAB.
Lesser Whitethroat. The first for the year were two singing at Sutton Scarsdale Flash on the 23rd.-AA with the first actually at Carr Vale singing on the 27th with another on the 30th.-MAB.
Whitethroat. The first for the year were two on the 22nd.-ISw with four singing on the 27th.-MAB.
Blackcap. One on the 1st.-ISw with six by the 10th.-MKN.
Chiffchaff. Peak count of 11th.-ISw.
Willow Warbler. Max count ten on the 24th.-ISw.
Willow Tit. A nest was being excavated on the 14th.-AI.
Jay. Four on the 16th.-ISw with one to three on nine other dates.-ISw et al.
Lesser Redpoll. Two on the 3rd.-ISw and one on the 19th.-ISw.
Bullfinch. Maximum 12 on the 5th.-ISw.
Reed Bunting. Max count 12 on the 5th.-ISw.
Bar-headed Goose. One present early on the 13th.-PSn
