March 2007 highlights

Not a month of great rarities but certainly plenty to enjoy. The bird that attracted most attention was probably the reappearing (and occasionally disappearing!) Great Grey Shrike at Ogston, which many finally caught up with.

The Great Northern Divers remained all month, the much discussed Scaup also found a new home and the evening gull show at Ogston just went on and on. What a fabulous winter we have had with the many white-winged gulls that have appeared there.

A Black-necked Grebe and a Rough-legged Buzzard were all too brief although the passage of both Whooper Swans and the (much less usual) Bewick’s Swans was enjoyed by more observers. Red Kites and Little Egrets we almost expect these days but perhaps the biggest thrill of the month was the arrival of Spring migrants. The latter included an Osprey and a Ring Ouzel at particularly early dates
