June/July 2007 highlights

No competition for the main story this time! On 29 June a Yellow-nosed Albatross (the first for Britain) was picked up exhausted in Somerset, but was released on the following day. At 3.00pm on 2 July, a bird was well watched by Cyril and Shirley Wood at Carsington Water was later reported as this species. Their sighting was viewed with incredulity until a week later when photographs appeared of this species taken on a fishing lake in Lincolnshire. It had appeared there at 7.00pm on 2 July!

All this will have to pass the usual tests but what price on Derbyshire being the first county to record two species of albatross (a Black-browed Albatross was found entangled in telegraph wires at Staveley in August 1952. It was later released at Skegness).

Other than that, in Derby the two Cathedral female Peregrine chicks fledged on 25 June and we had an exhausted Gannet found in Derby (photos on the Photo Gallery page), a report of an Alpine Swift, a singing Firecrest, two fly-through Shag and overall, a very good mix of species.
