May 2008 highlights

Almost something for everyone this month within a most impressive species list. There is little doubt that the Red-footed Falcon created the most interest but with semi-rarities such as Temminck’s Stint, Spoonbill and Wood Sandpiper about, it was partly a matter of making a choice and partly of being in the right place at the right time.

There was a healthy showing of both the rarer breeding species and potential new ones; the latter including more Avocets. A late flurry of gulls held Little Gull, Yellow-legged Gull and Kittiwake whilst the wader list was as long as I can remember in any month.

There was a good showing of Arctic and Black Terns, a few more Turtle Doves than usual and an excellent month for Red Kite records.
