June 2010 Bird News

These reports are unchecked. All records submitted via the "Submit a Record" page will be sent to the Bulletin Bird Notes Compiler and entered onto the DOS database even if they do not appear here. Please note that for obvious reasons we do not publish sightings of rare breeders such as Little Ringed Plover during the breeding season (unless obvious migrants)

April highlights

Definitely the month when wintering species disappear and incoming migrants arrive. Of the former, the long staying Great Northern Diver approached full summer plumage whilst Whooper Swans, Scaup and Common Scoter were still in evidence. In the vanguard of the summer species, came such delightful species as Garganey, Hobby and Yellow Wagtail.

Rarities included a Cattle Egret, two Common Cranes (which avoided several well known Carr Vale birders!) and a male Montagu’s Harrier. Sadly, all of those were somewhat brief in their stay as were three Dotterel.

Several Black Redstart were a nice surprise, our Cetti’s Warblers increased to four songsters, a Brent Goose is always an excellent find and there was a healthy mix of waders and warblers. It was also good to have at least one Corn Bunting in song.

Amongst the more obliging semi-rarities (for Derbyshire), were Red Kites, Marsh Harriers, Avocets and Little Gulls.

The result of all that was a near-record number of reports via both slips and our website (155 contributors). Many thanks to all who contributed.
