Bird News for March 2007

29 March: Drakelow WR (SK2220) male Wheatear, 55 Shoveler

29 March: Ogston Res (SK3760) The Great Grey Shrike was still present on the West Bank near Carr Wood. Also present 2 drake Common Scoters, a Merlin and a Swallow. In the Gull Roost were 2 first winter Iceland Gulls and a first winter Glaucous Gull.

29 March: Carsington Water (SK2552) 2 Juvenile Great Northern Divers again present and 5 Swallows flew through.

29 March: Willington GP (SK2827) A Little Egret, 2 Little Ringed Plovers and a Green Sandpiper

29 March: Barrow GP (SK3427) The 2 Eurasian White Fronted Geese and a Pink Footed Goose still present

29 March: Swarkestone Lake (SK3527) 1 Swallow

29 March: Long Eaton GP (SK5131) A Little Ringed Plover, c200 Sand Martins and a Swallow at 9.00 a.m. with a Short Eared Owl again early evening.


28 March: Ogston Res (SK3760) The Great Grey Shrike still present from the members hide early afternoon but again elusive. Also a Little Ringed Plover was noted along with the drake Scaup. In the Gull Roost was a first winter Glaucous Gull.

28 March: Carsington Water (SK2552) The juv. Great Northern Diver still present

28 March: Pleasley Colliery NR (SK4964) 4 Swallows

28 March: Allestree Park (SK3540) A male Lesser Spotted Woodpecker showed well by the Upper Lake at 11.25 a.m.

28 March: Long Eaton GP (SK5131) A Short Eared Owl over the main lake at 5.10 p.m

28 March: Mickleover (SK3035) 4 Buzzards over the estate


27 March: Ogston Res (SK3760) The Great Grey Shrike was still present and again ranged far and wide showing well in a hedge between the New Napoleon and the North Bank Car Park during the afternoon. In the gull roost were single first winter Iceland and Glaucous Gulls.

27 March: Carsington Water (SK2552) Still one juvenile Great Northern Diver

27 March: Holloway Church (SK3256) c100 Bramblings in beeches behind the church at 7.00a.m.


26 March: Westhouses Engine Shed (SK4257) 1 Wheatear, 2 Chiffchaffs, 2 Grey Wagtail, 1 Snipe, 10 Lapwing, 1 Willow Tit, 1 Green Woodpecker, 3 singing Skylarks, 1 Small Tortoishell & 1 Peakcock

26 March: Ogston Res (SK3760) The Great Grey Shrike still present and ranging as far as the East Bank at dusk. Also still here was the drake Scaup and 7/8 singing Chiffchaffs. In the Gull roost were single first winter Glaucous and Iceland Gulls.

26 March: Carr Vale NR (SK4669) The first winter Glaucous Gull again present, a first winter Iceland Gull flew over. Also 21 Pink Footed Geese flew through.

26 March: Carsington Water (SK2552) Still one juv. Great Northern Diver along with 31 Barnacle Geese, 3 Cackling Geese and 11 singing Chiffchaffs.

26 March: Long Eaton GP (SK5131) 1 Little Grebe, 23 Great Crested Grebes, 10 Cormorants, 4 Grey Herons, 1 Grey Lag Goose, 1 Egyptian Goose, 2 Shelduck, 15 Wigeon, 2 Gadwall, 5 Pochard, 27 Tufted Duck, 5 Goldeneye, 2 Green Woodpeckers and 3 Sand Martins flew East

26 March: Church Wilne Reservoir (SK4532) 10 Great Crested Grebe, 33 Wigeon, 15 Gadwall, 80 Tufted Duck, 28 Goldeneye

26 March: Tamworth Road, Sawley (SK4731) 2 Wheatears in a ploughed field behind Kams Garage


25 March: Poolsbrook Country Park (SK4373) An adult Iceland Gull on Mar 25th
22 March: Ogston Res (SK3760) The Great Grey Shrike showed on and off all day in fields west of the West Bank near Carr Wood. The drake Scaup still present along with 18 Goldeneye and 5 Chiffchaffs. In the roost were 3 first winter Glaucous Gulls and a first winter Iceland Gull
21 March: Ogston Res (SK3760) The elusive Great Grey Shrike was in fields to the West of the West Bank.

21 March: Willington GP (SK2827) 9 Great Crested Grebes, 9 Cormorants, 2 Grey Herons, 2 Gadwall, 8 Teal, 3 Pochard, 13 Tufted Duck,1 Goldeneye, 2 Kestrel, 2 Oystercatcher, 1 Chiffchaff, 1 Treecreeper and 3 Bullfinch

21 March: Barrow GP (SK3427) 10 Great Crested Grebes, 5 Cormorant, 2 Eurasian White Fronted Geese, 4 Grey Lag Geese, 3 Gadwall, 10 Tufted Duck, 2 Buzzard, 2 Curlew and a Redshank


20 March: Ogston Res (SK3760) A first winter Glaucous Gull and a first winter Iceland Gull roosted and the drake Scaup was still present.
19 March: Ogston Res (SK3760) A first winter Iceland Gull roosted but there was no sign of the Great Grey Shrike.

7 March: Carsington Water (SK2552) 3 Great Northern Divers at dusk, 2 off Stones Island with the third at Millfields. Like Rutland Water where there are still 7 of these birds dusk seems to be the best time to see them together.

4 March: Hilton GP (SK2431) 25 Greylag Geese, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Willow Tit, Buzzard


3 March: Swarkestone Lake (SK3627) 35 Greylag Geese, 1 Pink footed Goose, 2 Oystercatcher & 14 Stock Dove.

3 March: Barrow GP (SK3427) 2 White fronted Geese, 1 Egyptian Goose, c550 Lapwing, 60 Golden Plover, 2 Oystercatcher, 4 Pintail, 76 Mute Swan, c300 Wigeon, 7 Goldeneye & 1 Curlew.

3 March: Willington GP (SK2827) c70+ Curlew roosted, along with 8 Redshank, 1 Ruff, 4 Oystercatcher. Also 7 Water Rail, 20 Goldeneye, 4 Goosander, 144 Lapwing, 6 Shoveler, 2 Little Grebe and 1 overwintering Chiffchaff.

3 March: Carsington Water (SK2552) Great Northern Diver from the Wildlife Centre, Chiffchaff on Stones Island, at least 4 Oystercatcher, 4+ Redshank, 2 Barnacle Geese
