Bird News

This is a news service only and the reports are unchecked. All records submitted via the "Submit record" page will be sent to the Bulletin Bird Notes Compiler and entered onto the DOS database even if they do not appear here. Please note that for obvious reasons we do not publish sightings of rare breeders such as Little Ringed Plover during the breeding season (unless obvious migrants)

December highlights

An excellent range of species despite a comparative absence of rarities.

Several long-staying birds proved very popular including the Great Northern Diver at Carsington Water, which was joined very briefly by a Red-throated Diver, the Great Grey Shrike on the East Moors and a number of Common Crossbill.

Movements of migrating geese left a few stragglers to be found amongst commoner species, there was the usual good mix of gulls and at least one sizeable flock of Brambling. Lower water-levels at the main waters allowed waders to feed and the same conditions plus milder weather seemed to encourage Meadow Pipits to remain in the county as did at least one Oystercatcher.

There was late news of a White Stork in November and the first Common Redpolls of the winter were found amongst the Lesser Redpolls.
