March 2015 highlights

An excellent month for birders with wintering species hanging on whilst incoming migrants were arriving.

Amongst the latter were the expected Little Ringed Plovers, Sand Martins, Swallows and Wheatears (illustration by Steph Hicking) as well as early Yellow Wagtail and Willow Warbler.

There was an excellent mix of wildfowl species whilst the impressive range of waders included sightings of Avocets, incoming breeding birds and a good showing of Jack Snipe. The gull roosts attracted the usual enthusiasts who were delighted to find Kittiwakes, Little Gulls and some very obliging Iceland Gulls. Red Kites were again well recorded with a higher than usual number of records for Hen Harrier and Goshawk. Both of the latter remain vulnerable for which reason we do not give site details.

A separate article reports the illegal killing of a Peregrine and the notes report the first egg at a well-known nest.

Great Grey Shrikes continued to delight many of us although reports of Black-necked Grebe, Great White Egret and Purple Heron were from single observers and stayed all too briefly. All three would have been very popular had they lingered longer.

Other notable records involved a good passage of Whooper Swans, the last of the migrating Pink-footed Geese and the discovery that at least one of the introduced Black Grouse is still in the county.
