March 2018 highlights

An excellent month for variety in which relatively mild spells were separated by two very cold and snowy periods. The latter certainly moved some species out, whilst others such as thrushes and Reed Buntings happily moved into gardens to find food.

Several Black-necked Grebe proved popular whilst the wintering Great Northern Diver, Great White Egrets and long staying Hawfinch flocks also drew plenty of admirers. Plenty of Whooper Swans passed through, with large herds counted at Carsington Water and Carr Vale. An impressive range of wildfowl included a most obliging male Scaup at Carsington Water and brief reappearances by Drakelow's Long-tailed Duck.

Red Kites were reported from 17 locations, a good mix of waders included Avocets and a Knot whilst gull enthusiasts again had eleven species to enjoy.

There was a most encouraging number of Barn Owls reported, including several pairs, Ring-necked Parakeets look ready to breed (dividing opinion as to whether that is good or bad) and the find of the month was probably the Lapland Bunting which stayed long enough to please many.

As always, however, it was incoming migrants that were the most welcome and most of the expected species made it before the month end albeit that only one Ring Ouzel was reported and no House Martins.
