Bird News

This is a news service only and the reports are unchecked. All records submitted via the "Submit record" page will be sent to the Bulletin Bird Notes Compiler and entered onto the DOS database even if they do not appear here. Please note that for obvious reasons we do not publish sightings of rare breeders such as Little Ringed Plover during the breeding season (unless obvious migrants)

May highlights

A quite exceptional month for extreme rarities with our second ever Lesser Yellowlegs, our 6th Red-necked Phalarope and 7th Purple Heron. You could also have got pretty long odds on finding another Nightingale in the county.

Single Gannet, Honey Buzzard, Dotterel and Black Redstart would all have been more popular if they had showed to more than single observers although a Spoonbill was marginally more co-operative.

At Carsington Water, the last of the wintering Great Northern Divers seemingly transmogrified into a Black-throated Diver overnight (and it stayed to the month’s end!), the ‘wild’ Barnacle Goose extended its holiday and a passage Osprey seemed delighted to test one of the new platforms.

There were several easily-seen Garganey, and yet another record number of Red Kite sightings was supported by a good list of other raptors. Amongst the scarcer breeding birds, the Cetti’s Warblers sang on, a few Turtle Doves revealed themselves and a Corn Bunting reappeared at a traditional site.
