June/July 2015 highlights

The main feature of this period is the monitoring of breeding attempts and the relative success of the different species. Overall, this looks to have been a reasonable year in this respect.

Amongst rarer species, the Green-winged Teal found last month stayed long enough to attract more admirers, a Black-necked Grebe made a brief appearance, as did a Montagu’s Harrier and there were two reports of Black Redstart. There was a good passage of Osprey, a lot of Red Kite sightings and a report of a Marsh Harrier. Sadly, an American Kestrel at Ogston Res was too obviously an escape.

We might expect the occasional injured Wigeon or Goldeneye to summer, as reported, but the appearance of Scaup and Common Scoter in mid-year is always intriguing and keen-eyed observers are also turning up Caspian and Yellow-legged Gulls during this period.

An impressive list of waders included Avocets and a Spotted Redshank whilst an early showing of Crossbills may have more significance later in the year.
