Bird News - August 2016
This is a news service only and the reports are unchecked. All records submitted via the "Submit record" page will be sent to the Bulletin Bird Notes Compiler and entered onto the DOS database even if they do not appear here. Please note that for obvious reasons we do not publish sightings of rare breeders such as Little Ringed Plover during the breeding season (unless obvious migrants)

May 2016 highlights
A month of change as the last migrants arrived and the longer-staying winter species departed. The latter included the three Great Northern Divers, two of which were well into summer plumage, although the Linacre Res Shag did see out the month.
Two extreme rarities were splendid finds. First came news of the county’s second ever Great Reed Warbler and then of our fourth Black Kite. If only they had stayed a little longer!
There was a good mix of raptors, including a nice passage of Osprey and the now usual showing of Red Kites. The same could be said of the waders with the most notable being an Avocet, eleven Greenshank at one site and an unusual influx of Grey Plover.
Gull numbers dropped, as expected, but an Arctic Skua was a nice surprise whilst five species of tern contained two rare Whiskered Terns which moved on to grace other counties. If we add on records of Turtle Dove and Black Redstart, a full suite of warblers and some excellent counts of common species then there is much to be satisfied with.
