June-July 2017 highlights

As ever, June and July produced a wide mix of species and much information for our records. The latter included news of breeding successes, some excellent counts of singing birds/territories and evidence of diligent fieldwork.

We had our first breeding record for Red-Crested Pochard as well as news of summering Bittern, Ospreys and Mediterranean Gulls which can only give us hope of future colonisation. ‘Drop-ins’ included two Black-necked Grebes, two Spoonbills and two Black Restarts whilst we almost expect Avocets these days.

A Gannet and a number of Common Scoter seemed unseasonable, but wildfowl also started to return and waders were moving through again. A Turtle Dove record is always welcome, there was a full suite of warblers and an exceptional count of Raven. Mandarin produced many broods and there was further good news of our Twite.

Summer is not always a great time for rarities but a White Stork appeared, albeit almost certainly an escaped bird, and a Black Kite would represent an excellent sighting if supported by notes and confirmed
