Bird News - August 2018

This is a news service only and the reports are unchecked. All records submitted via the "Submit record" page will be sent to the Bulletin Bird Notes Compiler and entered onto the DOS database even if they do not appear here. Please note that for obvious reasons we do not publish sightings of rare breeders such as Little Ringed Plover during the breeding season (unless obvious migrants)

June and July 2018 highlights

A fascinating couple of months with some genuine highlights in several different respects. New record counts of Little Egret and Red Kite, young of the latter species on the wing, the first ever breeding attempt by Herring Gull, the first June Iceland Gull and our earliest ever Twite young. Even a nice mystery in the form of 34 Mandarin Duck eggs in an owl box. Not bad for the so called quiet months!

Yet more Great White Egret records, Common Scoters in both months and how nice to be able to report sightings of Turtle Doves and Corn Buntings. There was also a huge response to our request for data on Swifts, which is appreciated.

The usual excellent mix of waders included three Wood Sandpipers, a good passage of Black-tailed Godwits and yet another Avocet, whilst a good showing of Crossbills is always welcome. A Black Redstart was a splendid find but even scarcer were a Woodchat Shrike, found by visiting birders, and a surprise Hoopoe. On top of all that, plenty of warm weather to enjoy.
