All records submitted via the "Submit record" page will be sent to the Bulletin Bird Notes Compiler and entered onto the DOS database even if they do not appear here. November 2013 highlights
As might have been expected, the month took on a definite late autumn/early winter feel with plenty of wildfowl and a large passage of Pink-footed Geese. Great Northern Diver, Great Grey Shrike and Bittern returned, a family of Bewick’s Swan toured and winter thrushes were well in evidence. Scaup and Common Scoter were again reported but another Gannet may have been less expected.
A Snow Bunting delighted the lucky few who saw it but it was Glossy Ibis sightings that got rather more birders excited and quite a few were able to add the species to their county list.
There was an impressive list of waders and twelve gull species, which included both Iceland Gull and Glaucous Gull. Sadly, the report of two separate Woodcocks killed by collision with windows was part of a national phenomenon as was reported by the media.
Visible migration watches produced valuable data but nothing matched the dedication of the huge Wood Pigeon count, although the large Starling roost at Middleton Moor was clearly spectacular.
With plenty of Common Crossbills reported, time to keep an eye open for similar species since both Parrot Crossbills and Two-barred Crossbills have been turning up in other counties.
