November 2016 highlights

Another splendid month with much to enjoy. Rarities included a long-staying Slavonian Grebe and one or more Great White Egrets but much of the focus was on passage species with plenty of Whooper Swans and Pink-footed Geese as well as some impressive visible migration counts of commoner species.

Marine species were again prominent in that, apart from the Shag that completed a full year at Linacre Res, there was a Gannet, a few Common Scoters and Scaup plus a splendid Long-Tailed Duck.

No sign yet of a Great Northern Diver but the first Smew and Great Grey Shrikes of the autumn appeared and the Middleton Moor Starling roost reappeared.

Waders included an extended stay by a Little Stint, there were plenty of gulls to inspect, some impressive finch counts and a few Common Crossbills.

Breeding success becomes more apparent at this time of year and it would appear that Mandarin and Goldfinch are two of the species that have done well.

Lastly, but to the delight of many, Waxwings appeared after several thin years for this species. Hopefully, more will follow when we may be able to enjoy them right through until next April.
