Nov 2017 highlights

November was yet another fascinating month with something for everyone. The return of a Great Northern Diver to Carsington Water is almost expected nowadays but the rescue and release of a Red-throated Diver is not, so full marks to all involved in the latter.

The passage of Whooper Swans and Pink-footed Geese continued, wildfowl numbers built up and the mix of waders and gulls remained as rich as ever and remarkable for an inland county. Cattle Egrets may have been a surprise find but Great White Egrets have been reported in most recent months and the numbers of Little Egret seem to grow exponentially.

A Firecrest and a Snow Bunting were excellent finds and other records of note included a small influx of Ring-necked Parakeets, a very late Wheatear and the first hint that it may be another Waxwing year. On top of that, a quite remarkable build up of Tree Sparrows near Ogston Res.

Some of the counts showed the effectiveness of the increasing number of migration watches and this was well evidenced by the number of Hawfinch that were recorded. It would be splendid if some of the latter were to stay and boost our dwindling breeding population.
