January 2013 highlights

Popular birds at the start of the month were the Great Northern Divers, Bitterns, Whooper Swans, Velvet Scoter and Great Grey Shrike.

Even more of us enjoyed the huge numbers of Waxwings that were still with us, but few could have been more delighted than Alan Wragg who had 200 in his own garden! This species had other benefits, since it introduced us to many new contributors to our website and a number of those will undoubtedly be converted to membership following a successful marketing initiative started a few months back.

A Red-necked Grebe at Ogston Res was the first there for 15 years, a Little Gull stayed long enough to be admired at Carsington Water and a good mix of waders included Knot, Sanderling and the early return of Oystercatcher and Curlew.

There were some impressive counts of finches and buntings including a welcome increase in Hawfinch around the Cromford Wharf area. Not even a short period of bad weather could stop this being a January to remember
