January 2015 highlights

Despite difficult weather conditions at times, a promising start to the year with plenty of interest for both year listers and casual recorders.

The Great Northern Diver remained, as did Great Grey Shrikes and a good mix of wildfowl. Whooper Swans and Pink-footed Geese were well reported and there was late news of a wintering Ring Ouzel. Two Rough-legged Buzzards were reported and Bittern showed to a few observers.

We get plenty of Little Egret records each month but Great White Egrets are now appearing quite regularly and will hopefully continue to do so in the future.

There was a good number of both gull and wader species and the latter included wintering Common Sandpiper as well as the more regular Green Sandpiper. Amongst more common species, we had more than 50 reports of Goosander and excellent counts of Bullfinch and roosting Pied Wagtails. Three species of warblers were recorded and the Chiffchaffs included two tristis; one of which performed very reliably at Carr Vale.
