January 2019 highlights

January sees many birders starting new year lists and the increase in observer numbers produced both some excellent patch work and several splendid surprises.

Still in place from last month were Great Northern Diver, Black-necked Grebe, Bittern and the obliging Ogston Twite but there were also new finds in unexpected Bearded Tits, Lapland Buntings and a Yellow-browed Warbler.

Passage movements saw good counts of Whooper Swans, Pink-footed Geese and winter thrushes whilst a decent list of wildfowl species included a small influx of Shelduck.

Amongst the waders, Dunlin and Ruff continued their winter stay at Carsington Water, a good number of Jack Snipe were discovered, Golden Plover were surprisingly scarce, but Oystercatchers and Curlews were seen for the first time since they moved out last autumn.

There was a Glaucous Gull at an Ogston Res roost, and elsewhere there was entertainment in tracing a number of colour-ringed gulls. The number of Barn Owl sightings was most encouraging, and we saw some high counts of Skylark, Pied Wagtail, Brambling and Yellowhammer.
