December 2018 highlights

Derbyshire has a habit of producing a significant rarity in the final months (Crag Martin and Dusky Thrush in recent years, for example) and 2018 provided a fairly obliging Rose-coloured Starling to maintain that standard. More expected, but a little later than usual, was the Great Northern Diver at Carsington Water whilst the same site produced notes on a putative Red-Necked Grebe. If only the latter had stayed as long as the more obliging Black-necked Grebe at Long Eaton GP.

Willington GP again holds a wintering Bittern, a sighting of five Great White Egrets at one location holds enormous promise and it was great to see Bewick's Swans back on the list.

More Pink-footed Geese headed mainly eastwards, whilst amongst a good assortment of wildfowl a Garganey was an excellent find. The list of wader species was impressive within which we seem to have further confirmation of Ruff, Dunlin and Common Sandpiper as inland wintering species. An early Oystercatcher and a Grey Plover were also notable.

Gull-watchers were rewarded with a Swedish-ringed Mediterranean Gull and the number of reported Yellow-legged Gulls and Caspian Gulls is probably assisted by increased observer familiarity with these species.Barn Owl reports from 16 locations is a cause for rejoicing, a few Waxwing raised hopes of more to come, Ogston Res held a most obliging Twite and Carr Vale again proved the place to look for wintering Chiffchaff, where the total of eight included one of the tristis race.

Lots to enjoy, therefore, despite the absence of any Great Grey Shrikes
