May 2018 highlights

May is always an exciting month and, as this year, often sees the highest number of records in the monthly cycle. A few wintering species remain whilst the last of the incoming migrants arrive.

Our Great Northern Diver finally did depart as did a late Whooper Swan after its attempts to woo a Mute Swan. Wildfowl numbers dropped, as expected, but a drake Garganey was a nice find and one of the visiting Common Scoters stayed for a week.

We again saw a good range of waders; these included Avocets, Sanderlings, Little Stints and Turnstones. Red Kites were reported from more sites than ever whilst Marsh Harriers and Ospreys delighted those lucky enough to see them passing through.

Similarly, several scarcer species such as White Stork, Common Crane, Honey Buzzard and Golden Oriole would have pleased many, had they not been single observer sightings. It was also splendid to have news of a singing Black Redstart, a Woodlark and (hugely welcome) several Turtle Dove records.

Mediterranean Gulls are now regular monthly sightings, but we are also seeing more Little Gulls and an Iceland Gull is totally unexpected in May. Topping even those were an exceptional passage of Arctic Terns and a good number of Black Terns. Add in some excellent counts of common birds by our dedicated patch workers and the whole becomes most impressive.
