May highlights

Genuine rarities came in the form of Common Crane, Temminck’s Stint, and Red-rumped Swallow but the main invasion was the remainder of the summer migrants.

An excellent spread of waders also included Grey Plover, Sanderling and Curlew Sandpiper whilst an good passage of Arctic Tern was possibly the reason that Little, Sandwich and Black Tern were reported with them.

Such is the number of Red Kite records, that we may soon have to cease listing every sighting individually, but Osprey and Marsh Harrier were also in good numbers. They are all more easily found than Quail, Turtle Dove or Black Redstart these days, with each of those being notable records.

All of our breeding warblers were reported, including the fast-spreading Cetti’s Warbler but there is a list of species that would have been popular had they stayed longer. These included Garganey, Dotterel and Wood Sandpiper.
