February 2013 highlights

An excellent month for variety with both the weather and the birds taking on a more wintry look. The Great Northern Diver count grew to four, Ogston’s Red-necked Grebe stayed long enough to set a new record, the Velvet Scoter still attracted admirers and Great Grey Shrikes were well reported. Perhaps the most visited birds of the month, however, were the Bitterns at Wyver Lane which often proved very co-operative.

Wildfowl numbers were up, including a nice showing of Smew, together with notable numbers of all three Swan species and a continuing north-westerly passage of Pink-footed Geese. Three White-fronted Geese were an excellent find.

Raptors included birds starting to display, and returning waders produced good counts of Oystercatcher, Curlew and Ringed Plover. Amongst an excellent mix of gulls, the Little Gull at Carsington Water extended its stay to two weeks.

The hundreds of Waxwings produced yet another deluge of records (all gratefully received!) and the similarly aesthetic Hawfinches also saw plenty of admirers. Add just a hint of Spring, with Skylarks and other species in song, and there was surely something for everyone in February.
