February 2015 highlights

Seemingly, a quiet month by normal standards with wildfowl numbers quite low at the larger waters and little in the way of real rarities. In terms of species, however, still an excellent mix as wintering birds remained and breeding birds started to return. The Great Northern Diver and Great Grey Shrikes continued to attract year listers, as well as other admirers, and there was another impressive passage of Pink-footed Geese.

The highlight for many of us will have been the return of birdsong with many species now participating and some already at nest sites. Curlew and Oystercatchers were amongst the returning waders with Skylark and Meadow Pipit also building up in numbers.

We were again able to boast of eleven gull species, amongst which were the three “white-winged” specialities and a Kittiwake. With more about nationally this year, it was also good to have one of the Rough-legged Buzzards reach our own county.

We received dreadful news of another illegally killed Peregrine (see script) just as we were beginning to think that this sort of persecution might be easing off.

A real surprise was a mid-February Ring Ouzel. A number of wintering reports have come from other counties, as well as the male reported in the Bulletin last month, so we can only speculate as to whether this female was one of those or our earliest arrival ever.
