February 2018 highlights

February is often a quiet month but plenty of records this year and much variety. Our trio of egret species remained with the two Cattle Egret again proving very popular. A few more Whooper Swans and Pink-footed Geese passed through and there was an excellent mix of wildfowl which included the long-staying Long-tailed Duck.

Amongst the waders was an unseasonable Knot whilst Oystercatchers were back in force, Curlew numbers started to build up and the first Ringed Plover appeared. Gull enthusiasts had plenty to sift through and their efforts produced a total of eleven species.

Looking ahead to potential breeding birds, it was encouraging to hear about two Bittern, two separate multiples of Red Kite and a pair of Ring-necked Parakeet. We can but hope.

Other signs of Spring came in the form of bird song, woodpeckers drumming and territorial disputes but that came to a halt late in the month when snow and inclement conditions arrived. That did, however, drive birds into gardens with many thrushes reported and smaller birds at feeding stations.

Overall, there was a relative scarcity of Brambling and Lesser Redpoll but some Common (Mealy) Redpoll were found and the Hawfinches, Common Crossbills and Parrot Crossbills proved well worth a second look even for those who had already been to see them.
