February 2019 highlights

It was not difficult to believe that this was the warmest February on record as notable features of the month were birdsong and the early return of some summer visitors.

The wintering Great Northern Diver and Black-necked Grebe remained, as did one of the Lapland Buntings found last month, albeit that bird only for one more day. We now expect to see Great White Egrets in the summary, but a Cattle Egret was much less anticipated. Sadly, the latter did not hang around for us all to enjoy and other finds that were either all too brief or inaccessible were Black Redstart, Firecrest and Snow Buntings.

A few Whooper Swans and Pink-footed Geese passed through, while wildfowl numbers were about average for the time of year but included good numbers of Mandarin, four Smew and a brief reappearance by the Long-tailed Duck.

Waders included returning Oystercatchers and Curlew plus our first Ringed Plover of the year. Eleven species of gull is always impressive, and these included three white-winged species and a Kittiwake. There were just enough Waxwings to give anyone with a little patience a good chance to see them, and good news about both Barn Owls and Twite.

Add in a February Sand Martin, and some very impressive counts of common species, and the month surely had plenty for everyone.
