April 2013 highlights

A difficult month with unusually cold weather and easterly winds delaying both incoming and outgoing migrations. It may also have had an affect on resident birds as evidenced by three dead Barn Owls.

The retained winter species allowed further opportunities to see Great Northern Divers, Bitterns, Waxwings and Great Grey Shrike. Wildfowl numbers did reduce but there were new species in the form of two pairs of Garganey and an all-too-brief Ring-necked Duck.

A good range of waders included two Avocet at Middleton Moor and Dotterels which represented new site records for both Carr Vale and Ogston Res. The national increase in Marsh Harriers and Ospreys produced the now expected passage through our county but a putative Lesser Kestrel was a huge surprise, albeit that the details and photograph will have to pass the usual assessment process.

Gulls included an extended stay by several Little Gulls, a late Iceland Gull and a party of 12 Kittiwakes. Five tern species included an ultra-rare Whiskered Tern and a very early Black Tern.

With the east coast reporting good numbers of Firecrest, Black Redstart and Blue-headed Wagtails it was great to have all three species turning up on our patch as well. Excellent birding!
