Nov 2011 Bird News

This is a news service only and the reports are unchecked. All records submitted via the "Submit record" page will be sent to the Bulletin Bird Notes Compiler and entered onto the DOS database even if they do not appear here. Please note that for obvious reasons we do not publish sightings of rare breeders such as Little Ringed Plover during the breeding season (unless obvious migrants)

October highlights

A crossover month with many outgoing migrants slow to depart but a winter theme to incoming birds. The latter included an early, but brief, Great Northern Diver, Whooper Swans, Pink-footed Geese, one or more Great Grey Shrike, Bramblings and winter thrushes.

For county listers and rarity hunters, a Great White Egret was an excellent find as was the first ever DOS Squacco Heron, albeit that you had to watch the latter carefully if you wanted it in Derbyshire rather than Notts.

Both Brent Goose and Common Scoter are less usual inland birds and two separate Arctic Skuas well worthy of note. Gulls came in the now expected range of species but the number of wader species was very impressive for an autumn month. The Common Crossbills found last month stayed on and there may yet be more.

Whilst visible migration records will take a little while to collate, the list does show increased effort and more observers this year, and some excellent counts.
