Bird News - November 2015

This is a news service only and the reports are unchecked. All records submitted via the "Submit record" page will be sent to the Bulletin Bird Notes Compiler and entered onto the DOS database even if they do not appear here. Please note that for obvious reasons we do not publish sightings of rare breeders such as Little Ringed Plover during the breeding season (unless obvious migrants)

October 2015 highlights

A month with much interest be it rarer species, incoming and outgoing migrants or exceptional counts.

Within the first group, a juvenile Gannet was photographed in the unlikely setting of Middleton Moor, another Great White Egret mirrored the increasing number of sightings nationally and a Firecrest was an excellent find, as were three Bearded Tit. At Carsington Water, a Yellow-browed Warbler and a long overdue Ring Ouzel have the potential to add two more to the impressive site list.

As well as the first Whooper Swans of the autumn and a good passage of Pink-footed Geese, wildfowl numbers built up steadily. Amongst the latter was a splendid count of Mandarin Duck at Chatsworth Park (which recalled some of the early counts at Bradley Dam) and a best count of twelve Red-Crested Pochard at Long Eaton GP.

Raptors included late Osprey and Hobby, whilst a Curlew Sandpiper was in an impressive list of waders. Winter thrushes delighted many observers and garden feeding stations were also a source of pleasure, with many of the latter holding Siskin. Seemingly, the only sad note this month was of a Tawny Owl that had somehow managed to drown itself in a garden pond.

A count of 16 Little Egret suggests that they must breed soon whilst a further Ring-necked Parakeet follows news of two last month at Carr Vale, which came too late to be included in the bird notes.

October is always an exciting month for birders and this year was no exception
