October 2016 highlights

An excellent month even by normal October standards. Four species of grebe must be special whilst Bitterns that prove fairly obliging will always be popular and a Great White Egret put in several appearances.

There was a large passage of Pink-footed Geese, the early arrival of Whooper Swans and a promising build-up of wildfowl numbers. Waders and gulls both provided a healthy mix of species which included, unusually, a long-staying Grey Plover.

Raptors included several Marsh Harriers, winter thrushes came in good numbers and Great Grey Shrikes reappeared. Almost every month seems to produce a new site for Cetti’s Warbler and the Twite renaissance just keeps getting better and better.

Rarities included a Richard’s Pipit and three, possibly four, Yellow-browed Warblers. The latter was even more remarkable when measured against less than a dozen previous county records.

Local patch workers delight in new species or highest ever counts and it is always a pleasure to be able to include some of these in the Bird Notes. A total of 117 Mandarins at Linacre Res brought back memories of the early days at Bradley Dam, 14 Water Rails at one site is exceptional and 150 Stock Doves is a great count for a much-underrated species.
