This is a news service only and the reports are unchecked. All records submitted via the "Submit record" page will be sent to the Bulletin Bird Notes Compiler and entered onto the DOS database even if they do not appear here. Please note that for obvious reasons we do not publish sightings of rare breeders such as Little Ringed Plover during the breeding season (unless obvious migrants)

Oct 2017 highlights
Autumn always brings much to interest us and this year was no exception. Yet another Manx Shearwater was discovered, Great White Egrets have become almost monthly occurrences and several sites saw new species or record counts. The latter included the highest ever Pintail count at Carsington Water.
Whooper Swans arrived, the passage of Pink-footed Geese picked up and wildfowl included obliging Green-winged Teal and Long-tailed Duck individuals. It was nice to be able to report a Ruddy Duck (even without giving full details) and there was once again an impressive list of wader species. The list of gulls was less varied than usual but does include a number of Yellow-legged Gulls and a couple of Kittiwake.
Several rarer species reported were, sadly, all too brief or just seen by single observers and these included Bean Geese, Wryneck, Yellow-browed Warblers, Bearded Tits and a Firecrest. The national influx of Hawfinch, however, did push a good number of this large finch through the county and many birders were lucky enough to catch up with some of them. A number were reported from the visible-migration sites where there were also some excellent counts of both expected and less usual species.
Add in a few Water Pipits and Rock Pipits and there was plenty to look for whilst refamiliarizing ourselves with the calls of Fieldfare, Redwing and Brambling.
