October 2018 highlights

October has always been full of movement, as well as good finds, and such was the case again. Two adult Red-throated Divers were an excellent reward for early morning birding, a Snow Bunting was well photographed albeit on high ground and a Black-necked Grebe stayed all month. We had a county record count of Cormorant and the strange delivery of a Gannet in a box. Happily, the latter flew off strongly after being released.

There was a good passage of Pink-footed Geese and Whooper Swans along with regular reports of winter thrushes, Skylarks and Bramblings. Many of the counts being enhanced by the increasing interest and participation in visible migration watches.

Some summer species seemed slow to depart and there were late records for Osprey, terns, Wheatear, Ring Ouzel and several warbler species.

We had the usual strong mix of wildfowl and waders, the latter including an Avocet, whilst gull watchers turned up Kittiwakes.

Having accepted that Great White Egrets are likely to feature monthly now, the same may be the case for the less welcome Ring-necked Parakeets. There was a small influx of Common Crossbills and if the reported Great Grey Shrike is relocated then it will be a bonus after the thin showing during last winter
