This is a news service only and the reports are unchecked. All records submitted via the "Submit record" page will be sent to the Bulletin Bird Notes Compiler and entered onto the DOS database even if they do not appear here. Please note that for obvious reasons we do not publish sightings of rare breeders such as Little Ringed Plover during the breeding season (unless obvious migrants)

September highlights

A month of great variety and one in which Carsington Water set a new record monthly high of 124 species. The latter was undoubtedly assisted by such unexpected records as Gannet, Brent Goose, Arctic Skua and Honey Buzzard but an excellent achievement, even for such a well-watched site.

Perhaps the oddest (but much appreciated!) find of the month was the Nightjar which chose to roost in a Codnor garden for over a week. Whilst this and a few other species were slow to leave us, there were also early arrivals in the form of Whooper Swans, Pink-footed Geese and Fieldfare.

There were an impressive 21 species of wader recorded and also plenty of variety in the gulls and terns whilst Common Crossbill were well reported and a Turtle Dove record is always welcome these days.

One of the passage Osprey was identifiable through radio tracking and a Black-tailed Godwit was traced to its origins via colour rings. The month also saw the first serious migration monitoring of the autumn, with some impressive counts detailed in the script. All in all, a very high quality month for birders.
