September 2013 highlights

September is a month of change with outgoing migrants balanced by wintering species arriving. One feature this year has been the late departure of some of the former, possibly due to delayed breeding cycles after the poor weather in the first half of the year.

Our vote for bird of the month might go to the Nightjar found near dusk at Willington GP although Black-necked Grebe, Arctic Skua and Great Skua would all have been popular had they stayed longer.

A juvenile Garganey at Carsington was a fair test for those trying to find it, a Honey Buzzard gave close views at Carr Vale and the mix of waders also provided a few surprises. We hit a new high with 18 Little Egrets at Drakelow and the national Common Crossbill invasion meant that a few reached us.

Patch workers did their bit with some excellent monitoring of southerly passage that produced worthwhile counts of hirundines, Meadow Pipit and Skylark. Wildfowl numbers built up and the first wild Pink-footed Geese and Redwings of the autumn were noted. Add in some impressive counts of several finch species and there was certainly lots to enjoy.
