This is a news service only and the reports are unchecked. All records submitted via the "Submit record" page will be sent to the Bulletin Bird Notes Compiler and entered onto the DOS database even if they do not appear here. September 2014 highlights

An interesting month with a good range of species and several semi-rarities that proved fairly easy to see. In that category, two Black-necked Grebes, several Great White Egrets, a Little Stint and Bittern all stayed long enough to give us a chance.

A putative Wryneck still needs to be confirmed but the bird of the month, and certainly the most popular, would undoubtedly have been the Ortolan Bunting had it been located on the ground. There has only been one previous county record.

Wildfowl numbers started to build up nicely with a suggestion that Red-crested Pochards may be increasing in numbers. The range of gulls and terns was far more than an inland county can reasonably expect whilst the movement of Pink-footed Geese towards their next feeding station showed once again that we are fortunate to be on the flight path. The list of waders was also impressive.

Many species were present for the final time this year whilst others, such as Marsh Harrier and Osprey drifted through the county en route for their winter quarters.

Andrew Hattersley provided a further encouraging update on our fragile Nightjar population and it seems clear that the number of Cettiā€™s Warblers are also building nicely.
