Bird News - October 2015
This is a news service only and the reports are unchecked. All records submitted via the "Submit record" page will be sent to the Bulletin Bird Notes Compiler and entered onto the DOS database even if they do not appear here. Please note that for obvious reasons we do not publish sightings of rare breeders such as Little Ringed Plover during the breeding season (unless obvious migrants)

September 2015 highlights
Overall, a rather thin September for birders with wader passage noticeably restricted and reports of many species lower in number than is usual. Some nice surprises, however, with excellent news of our Twite and Nightjars, early incoming migrants and the continued presence of Bitterns and Great White Egret.
Wildfowl numbers built up, within which an eclipse Garganey was a good find, gull roosts started to grow and there was still a sprinkling of tern records. Passage raptors included several Osprey, a couple of Marsh Harriers and a possible Honey Buzzard whilst the presence of one of more other large birds (see comments under Common Crane) created some intriguing confusion.
The first Pink-footed Geese of the winter are always welcome but early Fieldfare and a Redwing were also notable, although the star sighting amongst the thrushes must have been the 31 Ring Ouzels found feeding together.
A good assortment of warblers, a few Swifts and three species of hirundines all stayed well into the month whilst Goldfinch numbers were impressive and the influx of Siskin continued.
