• North West Derbyshire George Hudson writes: Three Twite colour ringed in N W Derbyshire have been re-sighted already this autumn. One in Kent yesterday 15th Oct was last seen in N W Derbyshire on the 3rd Oct. 2016. Two at Tichwell in Norfolk this morning last seen in N W Derbyshire on the 27th and the 30th Sept. 2016. This year 86 Twite have been colour ringed in N W Derbyshire this year and 41 last year.

September 2016 highlights

A definite feel of autumn as the first Pink-footed Geese moved through the county, while summer visitors also departed and winter replacements arrived. The latter included a healthy build-up of wildfowl numbers.

The first-ever Pallid Harrier for the county created a huge amount of interest, but could be very elusive in less than ideal weather. Happily, a good number of observers caught up with it during its brief stay. Amongst the semi-rarities, a Pectoral Sandpiper was a splendid find and Little Stint, Dotterel, Avocets, Common Crane and Yellow-browed Warbler were also reported.

We have got rather used to seeing our share of seabirds, so two more Shag and some Common Scoters did not raise too many eyebrows but two Manx Shearwaters (one of which survived) were certainly a surprise. Few experiences, however, could have bettered the early evening fall of some 50 terns at Carsington Water; four species were involved including one very rare White-winged Black Tern.

Most species of warbler moved southwards during the month during which a Wood Warbler which stayed in a garden for a while was a great discovery. There was also further good news about our relict Twite population and the first Brambling of the winter, so a very varied month with plenty to enjoy.
