Sep 2017 highlights

An interesting month, during which summer visitors departed in large numbers, wintering birds started to arrive and both were affected by spells of turbulent weather. The latter brought in two, possibly three, Manx Shearwaters, a potentially record number of Gannets and a Shag, Sadly, the latter did not survive nor did one of the shearwaters with another taken into care.

Only a few years back, we would barely have dreamed about 26 Little Egrets in a roost. We may feel less enthusiastic, however, about the sudden increase in Egyptian Geese numbers when we look at the latest counts for Canada Goose.

Wildfowl numbers built up, amongst which a Garganey was a good find, an impressive list of gulls was supplemented by four species of tern and there was plenty to see in the long list of waders. The latter included several Little Stint, which were part of a national influx, Knot, Dunlin and a semi-rarity in the form of a Grey Phalarope.

There was an early movement of Pink-Footed Geese and unusually early flocks of Fieldfare and Redwing. Dippers are one of the county’s specialities but the one found at Carsington Water was extra special, as it was the first site record. The list also shows some healthy counts of Goldfinch which have clearly had an excellent year and emphasise our need to monitor and be aware of the commoner species as well as the scarcer ones.
