September 2018 highlights

As ever, a transitional month with migration both in, out and through the county. That produced some commendable and very interesting counts, thanks to diligent patchwork and the increasing participation in visible migration watches.

Marsh Harriers and Ospreys drifted through the county, the first waves of Pink-footed Geese passed overhead and there were the usual surprises such as a Gannet and a very early Brambling. Two Common Cranes were reported and a Black-necked Grebe stayed for the second half of the month. Wildfowl numbers grew slowly and included a few sea duck, whilst a most impressive list of waders included two Wood Sandpipers, a Turnstone and at least two Grey Phalaropes. Add in the usual mix of gulls and both Black and Arctic Terns and there was every reason to spend time at wetland sites.

Great White Egrets now feature in the bird notes almost every month and there was a further update on our increasing Twite population. The month end saw Redwings and there was a welcome set of Grey Partridge records, albeit accompanied by the less welcome news that one shoot alone had released 2400 Red-legged Partridges recently
