August 2013 highlights

Another very varied month saw lots of welcome breeding records, amongst which were significant counts of Nightjar, Tree Sparrow and several finch species. We also received some detailed warbler counts and Mistle Thrush numbers built up as post-breeding flocks formed.

The find of the month was arguably a popular Spotted Crake at Wyver Lane although any sighting of a Corn Bunting is good news these days. Little Egrets in the Drakelow roost peaked at nine.

Wader movements were pleasing, winter wildfowl began to return and gull roosts started to attract attention again. Both Arctic Terns and Black Terns appeared, as did Common Scoters at two of our waters.

Raptor sightings included Marsh Harriers and Ospreys and a Honey Buzzard was announced on the pager systems but has yet to be confirmed.
