August 2014 highlights

What is most impressive is the sheer number of species recorded this month, as is well evidenced by a total of 22 waders. The latter including Sanderling, Little Stint, Spotted Redshank, Curlew Sandpiper and Turnstone.

Just as exciting was the mix of raptors with a strong showing of Marsh Harriers, the discovery of a Montagu’s Harrier, two claims of Honey Buzzard and returning Ospreys.

Wildfowl began to trickle back, with a trio of juvenile Pintail and a peak of seven Red-crested Pochards notable. Common Scoter have been regular in recent years but are still excellent finds as were the Great Skuas, Kittiwake, Arctic Terns and Black Terns.

Amongst the rarer species Great White Egrets included one very cooperative bird at Willington GP, but what spoiled the find of a Corncrake was that it appeared to have been a road casualty.

Add in some exceptional counts of commoner species and confirmation of breeding success in many cases and there were a number of good signs. The report of Nightjar numbers is very interesting and the presence of a Black Redstart and a Fieldfare during the summer months is always intriguing.
