Aug 2017 highlights

The history of observer cover at Carr Vale has been mentioned in the Bulletin on many occasions, so many of the excellent finds are the product of diligent patchwork rather than just luck. Even so, to turn up both Sabineā€™s Gull and Caspian Tern (both for the second year running) is quite remarkable and a credit to the CV team.

Elsewhere, Shag appeared again, the Little Egrets just keep increasing in numbers and wintering wildfowl started drifting back into the county. Amongst the latter was the first Pintail for the second half of the year, more Common Scoter (almost monthly now!) and a growing number of Red-crested Pochard.

Raptors included the long staying Ospreys and a good passage of Marsh Harriers. Summering waders started to depart but were replaced by an excellent mix of passage birds and a Quail sufficiently visible as to be photographed is certainly remarkable.

Add in good news of our Nightjar population and some encouraging counts of common species, particularly finches, and it proved yet another fascinating month
