March highlights

Almost 3500 records this month and plenty of variety. Winter hung on through residual Great Northern Diver, Whooper Swans, Smew, Common Scoter and winter thrushes, but the first summer visitors arrived in the form of Garganey, Red-Breasted Merganser, Osprey, Wheatear, Ring Ouzel and a large influx of Chiffchaff.

The usual eclectic mix of gulls extended to 12 species during the month and those still concentrating on their year lists, had plenty of chances to see Common Crossbill and Hawfinch. The number of Cetti’s Warbler records shows the steady infiltration of that species and the increase in Little Egret and Red Kite reports must surely lead to a breeding event soon.

The wonders of modern digital photography provided proof (sadly!) that a wandering White Stork had been both ringed and pinioned at some stage, so was clearly an escape. There were, however, some other splendid stories, especially for Glaucous Gull, Great Grey Shrike and “Willowchiff”.
