March 2014 highlights

As is usual, March saw some wintering birds depart but to be replaced by the earliest of the summer visitors. Great Northern Diver, Bittern, Smew and Great Grey Shrike were still with us, as was the Lesser Whitethroat which has received so much attention, but the passage of Whooper Swans and Pink-footed Geese showed that Spring was upon us.

In came, Garganey, Wheatear and Ring Ouzels, together with the first hirundines and other expected migrants. Three Black-necked Grebes and a Great White Egret were excellent finds although we would welcome more details of a claimed Rough-legged Buzzard.

Wildfowl numbers reduced but there was still a good showing of gull species and returning waders included Avocets. Perhaps the latter will breed one day as they continue to extend their colonisation across the country.

Popular birds included the Middleton Moor Starling roost, a showy Firecrest at Carr Vale and a very cooperative Jack Snipe at Carsington Water.

Amongst the passerine records, some excellent counts reflected dedicated “patch work” although it did show the current shortage of Grey Partridge and not a single Corn Bunting was found.
