March 2016 highlights

A very varied month brought in more records that in any previous March. Well-watched species such as Great Northern Diver, Shag, Bittern, Whooper Swan and Black Redstart stayed on from last month whilst a Glossy Ibis was a new attraction and was obligingly present for three days.

There was a splendid mix of wildfowl and eleven species of gull, plus a rich variety of waders that included an Avocet and the first returning Little Ringed Plovers.

A total of 21 Red Kite sightings suggests that we may soon find a breeding pair and a full ‘set’ of our breeding owls is always good to have in the notes. Passage birds included Ospreys, Marsh Harrier and a Sandwich Tern.

The expected hirundines, Ring Ouzel and Wheatear duly appeared, together with some early Willow Warblers, but a Woodlark and a Firecrest were excellent finds albeit that both sightings were fairly brief.

A Great Grey Shrike was finally pinned down to one site, Bramblings remained scarce but an exceptional count of Greenfinches was encouraging after several years of being affected by disease.
