March 2019 highlights

As ever, March was a month of departures and fresh arrivals. The Great Northern Diver and Black-necked Grebe continued their stay, the former just beginning to show signs of summer plumage. A few late Whooper Swans and Pink-footed Geese moved through, whilst wildfowl numbers dropped considerably during the second half of the month, albeit that there were further visits from the female Long-tailed Duck and a couple of Common Scoter.

A good list of waders saw Oystercatcher and Curlew in good numbers, the first returning Little Ringed Plovers and at least one Avocet.

Eleven species of gull is always impressive and that included three species of 'white-winged' gulls, some of which were easily caught up with. We saw our first Osprey of the year, as was the case with Wheatear and Ring Ouzel, a flurry of Sand Martins was followed by a few Swallows and a single House Martin. A Hooded Crow was one of the less expected finds.

A whole-site survey at Carsington Water produced some most impressive counts, none more so than 104 Chiffchaff, whilst there was an update on the rookery counts. In both cases, solid 'patch work' was involved and grateful thanks are due. You will also see fascinating news of a Lesser Whitethroat caught and ringed in February, which turned out to be of the Siberian race blythi.
