June/July 2014 highlights

A heartening part of the summer reports is that it seems to have been a good breeding season so far for all but a few species. Members also responded well to our appeal for Swift data which is much appreciated.

Two sightings of Great White Egret were appreciated and Little Egrets seemed widespread, although visits from Black-necked Grebe and Glossy Ibis were all too brief, as was an incursion by the Notts Honey Buzzards. Unconfirmed reports of Black Stork and Corncrake well illustrate the difficulties of assessing rarities without the cooperation of the finders, to which end this edition of the Bulletin carries a special article.

A Black Redstart is always a good find, there was a good mix of waders and the gull season seems to cover every month these days. A few unseasonable birds included several Wigeon, a moulting Scaup and an injured Goldeneye as well as an impressive passage of Common Scoter
