November highlights

November can often be one of the less productive months but, despite some miserable weather, this year it provided lots of excellent birds and they provided much enjoyment. The latter was partly caused by a generous delivery of Waxwings with a number of new names added to those sending in records.

Great Northern Divers appeared at Carsington Water, as we now expect, but far less expected was a Slavonian Grebe at the same site. Other excellent finds were a Common Crane, a Brent Goose, Common (Mealy) Redpoll, a couple of Bitterns and a male Snow Bunting discovered and photographed by a walking group.

Whooper Swans and Pink-footed Geese moved through, there was a good mix of waders and gulls, several late Swallows and sea-duck in the form of Scaup and Common Scoters.

At least one Grey Great Shrike could still be found occasionally, three species of warbler look set to winter and, having got used to recording Little Egrets, dare we hope that Great White Egrets will also grace us more regularly.

Some species of wildfowl do seem in lower numbers so far this winter, there are no major finds of Brambling flocks as yet and, just as we had reached the stage where it was getting difficult to list every Red Kite sighting, there were no reports at all this month.
