January 2014 highlights

Year listers were pleased to find that Great Northern Divers and Great Grey Shrikes had stayed into 2014 and sightings of Bittern, Whooper Swans and passing Pink-footed Geese will have benefited many lists.

One clear highlight, however, was the new county record count for Shoveler; a fitting reward for hard working patch recorders. Other wildfowl were also found in good numbers with over 500 Pochard at Carsington Water and a good count of Smew at Aston on Trent GP.

A Great Skua was perhaps deflected by some strange weather patterns but was supported by an excellent mix of gulls as reward for roost watchers. Three Snow Buntings were an excellent high altitude find, although the three Corn Buntings are arguably of equal significance these days in terms of our county avifauna.

Bramblings and other finches were well reported, as were Common Crossbills. Warblers were present in the form of the wintering Lesser Whitethroat (now thought to be of the eastern race), a glut of Blackcaps and a few Chiffchaff.

High water levels and coloured water redirected some species but the mild weather produced plenty of early bird song and will have helped smaller species as well as our embryonic population of Cetti's Warblers.
